Why We Chose Cloudberry (When Almost No One Else Does)
Most paw balms are designed for general conditions.
We formulate for real winter. There’s a difference.
When temperatures drop below freezing, when pavement is salted daily, when dry heated air from your home compounds moisture loss — ingredient choices matter.
That’s why we chose cloudberry seed oil.
Not because it’s trendy.
Not because it’s common.
Because it aligns with cold-climate performance.
Many balms are formulated for:
- Broad climates
- Shelf appeal
- Cost efficiency
- Cosmetic softness
Some include trendy additives or marketing ingredients that sound impressive but don’t meaningfully contribute to winter barrier performance.
We took a different approach.
We stripped away the unnecessary fillers.
No artificial fragrance.
No trendy add-ons designed to justify price without improving performance.
We choose purity.
Arctic Gold Is Rare for a Reason
Cloudberries (Rubus chamaemorus) grow in northern boglands across Scandinavia, Canada, and Alaska. They survive in:
- Sub-zero winters
- Short growing seasons
- Nutrient-poor soil
- Harsh environmental exposure
In Nordic regions, they’re called “Arctic gold.”
They’re:
- Difficult to harvest
- Limited in supply
- More expensive than common carrier oils
- Rarely used in mass-produced products
Cloudberry seed oil is not a budget ingredient.
It’s intentionally uncommon.
Documented Nutrient Density
Cloudberries have been studied for their exceptional nutrient profile. Research from the University of Alaska Fairbanks has documented their high vitamin C levels — higher than many common berries.
More importantly for topical use, the seed oil contains:
- Vitamin E
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Omega-6 fatty acids
- Naturally occurring antioxidant compounds
Vitamin E and essential fatty acids are widely recognized for supporting the skin’s lipid barrier — the outer layer responsible for retaining moisture and protecting against environmental stress.
In freezing climates, barrier support isn’t cosmetic.
It’s functional.
Designed for Sub-Zero Stability
Winter in northern states creates a predictable stress cycle:
- Cold air strips moisture
- Ice melt salt pulls hydration from skin
- Freeze-thaw exposure weakens the barrier
- Dry indoor heat compounds damage
Many oils are chosen for softness in mild conditions.
We chose an ingredient that evolved in Arctic conditions.
Cloudberry seed oil remains structurally stable in cold environments and supports moisture retention without relying on synthetic additives.
That stability matters.
Why It Costs More
Rare ingredients cost more.
Hard-to-source ingredients cost more.
Formulating without artificial fillers or trendy add-ons costs more.
But purity and performance were non-negotiable.
We didn’t build this to compete at the lowest price point.
We built it for real winter Intentional.
We’re not trying to be everywhere.
We’re trying to be aligned with a specific environment:
Snow.
Ice.
Salted pavement.
Dry northern air.
And Cloudberry fits that philosophy.
If you live somewhere that experiences true winter, your ingredients should reflect that reality.
